This interactive live webinar is part 7 of the 8 part Utility of Cell-Free DNA in the Clinic Series.

Description:

Metagenomic sequencing of body fluids from patients is a transformative approach to diagnose infections from nearly all pathogens, whether virus, bacterium, fungus, or parasite.

This presentation will discuss emerging clinical applications of this technology, including detection of viral pathogens using a pocket-sized nanopore sequencer and the construction of RNA gene expression-based classifiers using machine learning algorithms to distinguish between infectious and non-infectious causes of acute illness

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the role of clinical metagenomic sequencing in diagnosis of unknown infections
  • Identify the advantages and disadvantages of clinical metagenomic sequencing over other microbiological tests for pathogen detection
  • Summarize potential applications and clinical indications for this emerging diagnostic approach
  • Discuss new technological and bioinformatics advances in the metagenomic field (e.g. diagnostic and predictive classifiers based on the patient’s host response, nanopore sequencing)
