Description:

DNA methylation plays an essential role in regulating gene transcription and cell fate. Both normal tissues and neoplasms have unique genome-wide methylation signatures that can be interrogated using modern molecular techniques. This presentation will describe the clinical applications of genome-wide DNA methylation profiling and its emerging role as a tumor biomarker. Emphasis will be placed on how DNA methylation profiling can refine tumor classification schemes and be utilized as a clinical diagnostic for molecular tumor classification.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the basic biology of DNA methylation and the specific technologies used to detect DNA methylation in the clinical environment.
  • Describe how tumor classification schemes can be refined using unsupervised methylation profiling.
  • Describe how methylation profiling can be used as a clinical diagnostic in the molecular pathology laboratory.
