This presentation discusses current methods used to identify bacteria by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and fungi by use of the ITS (Internal Transcribed Spacers) and D1/D2 regions, including both technical and bioinformatic analyses. Additional content covers use of these methods to identify pathogens in primary samples, example cases and clinical reporting, potential application of next generation sequencing (NGS)-based methods, and considerations for labs developing and implementing these assays.
