Description:

This presentation will describe what is known regarding optimal sampling for initial diagnosis of infection with the SARS-CoV2 virus, based upon both published data and unpublished data that has previously been provided to FDA.  Particular attention will be given to sampling devices and locations, including nasopharynx, mid-turbinate, nose, saliva and sputum, as well as specimen transport.  In addition, the presentation will describe relationships between molecular test results and the clinical and virological course of covid19, together with the impact of these factors on CDC recommendations for patient management and their implications for test utilization management.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the strength and weakness of sampling from various anatomic sites for detection of SARS-CoV-2 by molecular methods.
  2. Describe the time course for molecular detection of SARS-CoV-2 virus and the relationship to recovery of productive virus from symptomatic individuals.
  3. Describe current recommendations for isolation of symptomatic individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2.
