Session Description:
The tumor microenvironment consists of various host components including myeloid cells which can exert a dual role on tumor development and progression. Tumor cells can be directly eliminated by the immune cells that had developed an antitumoral immune response, but can also recruit and instruct immune cells to promote tumor growth and progression. The session will review the dual role of tumor associated neutrophils and macrophages (TAN and TAM) and discuss efforts to target these cells, including “reeducation” of these immune-inflammatory cells to activate their antitumor potential or elimination of tumor promoting cells.
Objectives:
After this session, participants will be able to:
- Understand the role of tumor microenvironment in carcinogenesis and cancer progression
- Familiarize with the role of TAM and TAN in affecting tumor growth and progression
