The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that climate change will have a significant impact on human health, particularly in developing countries. In addition to the increase in the number of emerging pathogens, climate change may result in the introduction of both established and emerging pathogens in new geographic areas. A genomic based approach to global surveillance of pathogens has the potential to prevent or allow for better response to potential outbreaks and epidemics.
